Our Inspiration

You’ve definitely heard of Albert Einstein. You’ve probably heard of Nikola Tesla. You’ve likely even heard of Alan Turing.

You’ve probably not heard of Claude Shannon.

Born in Michigan in 1916, Claude Shannon was an electrical engineer and mathematician active from the 1930s. Later dubbed “the father of information theory” and “a founding father of modern cryptography”, Shannon worked on fire control systems and cryptography for the United States during World War II. He later went to work at the legendary Bell Labs, then MIT.

Shannon made landmark discoveries in multiple fields, any one of which would be considered a masterpiece in its own right.  His work spanned telecommunications, natural language processing, spectrum efficiency, detection theory, and artificial intelligence – a polymath on the level of da Vinci, Euler, & Pascal. The common thread in all his work was the distillation of data or signal to its essence – the information – from a background of confusion & noise.

Later in his career, Shannon worked informally on what he called “scientific investing”, applying the same concepts to the field of quantitative finance. The strategy now known as volatility harvesting was pioneered by Shannon, who understood it from first principles.

At Shannon Analytica, we strive to imitate the application of mathematic and engineering concepts to a broad range of applications like Claude did.
